This month saw the UK’s official opening, by the Queen, of a new cyber-warfare HQ after the government promised to invest £1.9 billion to improve cyber defences.

In an age where the UK is threatened by serious cyber-attacks on a daily basis; cyber security is now, quite certainly, a national matter. According to reports, the UK has a digital sector worth more than £118 billion a year; forming a digitally dependent economy. This is a precarious time for businesses to be experiencing a shortage in security experts and the environment shows no signs of positive change any time soon.

The National Cyber Security Centre is strong step in the right direction and will work to manage incidents, analyse threats and offer advice for online security. Threats occur across a broad spectrum; they can affect individuals, as well as businesses, and can range from phishing emails aimed at extracting personal information, to invasive hacks on large corporations to steal data and money. Since its soft launch in October, the NCSC has already responded to 188 attacks.

Crime on the rise

With so many attacks happening every single day, not including the threats that haven’t been highlighted, it isn’t a surprise to find out that Cyber Security skills are in high demand in both the public and private sector. Demand is so high that it’s creating a skills shortage. With technology changing so rapidly, almost on a daily basis, these skills will only continue to become more in-demand and evermore complex.
